expects increased scrutiny will extend confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee into the weekend.
While Portman and other Republicans support the nominee, some lawmakers say they have not had enough time to review the more than 40,000 documents released Monday. The documents detail Kavanaugh鈥檚 time working for the George W. Bush administration.
The Senate Judiciary Committee hearings thus far are marked by frequent Kavanaugh protestors. Portman called the hearings 鈥渟pirited鈥� but said that is to be expected nowadays.
鈥淚 think that鈥檚 just the new normal for Washington. It鈥檚 too bad that sometimes these hearings look like a circus to people,鈥� he said. 鈥淥n the other hand, it鈥檚 very appropriate for people to express themselves and do it in an appropriate way.鈥�
Sen. Portman said he was honored to introduce Kavanaugh at yesterday鈥檚 hearing, calling him humble, compassionate and an 鈥渋ncredibly good person.鈥� Portman and Kavanaugh previously worked together in the Bush administration.
